Haiti Trip August: Day 1: Arrival and Welcome

Posted on with 2 Comments

Greetings from Haiti! Our team of six (Sam & Malia Kohls, Caroline Muñoz, John Darcy, Kevin Berthoud & JD Cowart) left San Diego late Wednesday night and arrived in Port au Prince without incident Thursday morning. Fr. Noe greeted us warmly at the airport and, after the two and a half hour drive to his home parish of St. Andre's in Hinche, fed us a tableful of Haitian staples - poullet en sauce (chicken with traditional Creole gravy), red beans and rice, fried plantains, and fresh-off-the-stalk fruits and vegetables. Between the mountainous drive and the home-cooked Haitian feast, the rest of the team understood right away why JD has been anxious to come back here.

After the red-eye flight and long journey to Hinche, today was a day of rest, dedicated to unpacking and sorting five suitcases' worth of supplies for the kids in Loranette, taking a moment to unwind and shed the tensions of the pre-trip build-up and travel to Haiti, and (when the afternoon heat began to ease up) exploring this quaint little "city" of Hinche on foot. The real work begins tomorrow. Today was for giving thanks for our safe arrival and taking a moment to soak in our new surroundings.

Thank you for your prayers and support.
